A tree-topped delight

Tweet tweeeeeet.

I heard the loud tweet before I saw the bird. The chirp was insistent. Urging me to look up.

The bird was perched on the peak of a blue spruce. 40 feet high or more. It was standing on the top branch that juts straight up. The tippy tippy top.

Like a star on top of a Christmas tree.

I stood and watched the bird shriek at the top of its little lungs. It looked like a blue jay, but grey, though it was hard to discern from my street level stance.

Luckily he was a noisy guy. Otherwise I would not have glanced skyward and noticed this delightful sight. A singing bird perched like a tree topper.

The grey blue jay soon flew away, as birds do. Then to my surprise a second bird swooped in to take its place. Again on the tippy tippy top. How delightful.

I couldn’t help but scan the tree tops as I continued my walk. I didn’t spot any more avian tree toppers that day or the days that followed.

Then Christmas Eve day, what did I find on the very same blue spruce? A grey blue jay. Perched regally on the tippy tippy top. Small joys can bring big smiles. Smile I did.

I am thankful I had many reasons to smile this past year, from hiking beautiful landscapes to cherished moments with family and friends to joyful encounters with wildlife. As we toast to another year, wishing the new year brings you and your families peace and joy and plenty of smiles.
