Intentional living

Simplicity

Simplicity.

This is the name of our Christmas tree this year. (Our local garden centre attaches a name tag on each tree to add a little whimsy to the tree selection experience.) The tree fits nicely in our home. It’s not too tall, so there’s room for the star on top. The bushy green branches are well spaced to host our assortment of well-worn ornaments.

We chose the tree for its pleasing shape and size rather than its name. But the name fits quite well too. Wizard, Joey or Audi would not feel right this year.

In a year where good health, family and a comfy home are appreciated more than ever, simplicity resonates.

This year’s holiday will be simpler than others. Luckily some of the great pleasures in life are simple. Such as…

….freshly baked cookies!

I have a special cookie recipe from someone who loves cookies. He’s furry. Blue. Goggly eyes. Deep growly voice. His favourite thing is EATING COOKIES. He’s also very messy as he squashes them in his big mouth.

Om nom nom.

The recipe is special as it’s been in Cookie Monster’s family for years. It’s also simple.

Cookie monster does not use any special equipment or ingredients. He mashes up the butter and sugar with a fork. Blends in the eggs and vanilla with the fork. Pours the flour directly on top, with a sprinkle of salt and baking powder (no need to sift in a separate bowl). Once the dough is mixed all together it will keep for a long time in the refrigerator (or “icebox” according to this recipe from my trusty Big Bird’s Busy Book from the 70s). Whenever you want to make some cookies, just take out what you need, roll out the dough, and cut into whatever shape you want.

Simplicity.

I started by making some star cutouts. A simple holiday shape. As the cookies turned golden in the oven, a sugary buttery scent filled our kitchen. I understand why waiting for the cookies to bake is the HARDEST part for Cookie Monster. Om nom nom.

Sugary treats in the kitchen and a pleasant piney scent wafting in the living room from our Christmas tree Simplicity. Ahhh. So good.

Wishing you and your families a warm holiday season filled with health, happiness and simple pleasures.

This brings back fun memories of watching Sesame Street with my children (now 38 and 35). “Don’t try this at home” comes to mind when seeing Cookie Monster gobble his treats – crumbs flying everywhere. But how could we stay mad at CM for his enthusiastic messiness? I am going to make this recipe at Christmas and remind my children. All the best to you and your’s, Andrea, in 2021.

That’s wonderful to hear Linda! I have such fond memories of watching Sesame Street as a child… and the characters have brought me lasting joy 🙂 All the best for 2021 Linda.
